Everything You Need to Know
What Are Clear Aligners?
Clear aligners are a series of transparent trays custom-made for each patient. They gradually straighten teeth without the need for metal braces or wires. The aligners are made from a specialized plastic material. To create them, the orthodontist sends either a digital scan or a three-dimensional model of the patient's teeth to the manufacturer. The doctor then programs the specific tooth movements required for treatment, allowing a series of custom aligners to be produced.
Using advanced 3D technology, a numbered sequence of aligners is created. Patients wear each aligner in the prescribed order determined by the orthodontist. Typically, each aligner is worn for approximately one week before being replaced by the next in the series.
How Do Clear Aligners Work?
Using the latest advancements in 3D digital technology and following the orthodontist’s treatment plan, a series of custom-made clear aligners—Invisalign® aligners—are manufactured to gradually move your teeth into their desired positions.
Each aligner applies carefully controlled forces to specific teeth, moving them little by little with precise pressure. This gradual process allows tooth movement to occur in a predictable and efficient manner. Every aligner in the series is slightly different from the previous one. The pressure points also change throughout treatment, progressively guiding the teeth toward their ideal alignment based on the individualized treatment plan created for each patient.
How Often Should My Orthodontist Monitor My Treatment Progress with Clear Aligners?
In most cases, follow-up appointments are scheduled every four (4) weeks and, less frequently, every six (6) weeks. The exact interval depends on the severity of the orthodontic condition and the progress of the treatment.
What Are the Main Advantages of Orthodontic Treatment Without Braces (Clear Aligners)?
- Invisalign clear aligners are an ideal orthodontic treatment option for adults—and many other patients—who want to achieve a beautiful smile without wearing traditional braces.
- Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible.
- They are removable. You can easily take them out when eating or brushing your teeth. This means you can continue enjoying your favorite foods throughout treatment, unlike traditional braces, which require caution with hard, sticky, or chewy foods.
- They allow you to maintain excellent oral hygiene throughout treatment.
- Invisalign treatment is comfortable and generally pain-free.
- The aligners do not irritate the gums.
- They do not usually interfere with speech, unlike traditional braces.
- Because Invisalign aligners are easily removable, they do not prevent you from visiting your dentist or periodontist for routine cleanings and other dental treatments.
How Can I Know Whether Clear Aligner Treatment Is Right for Me?
The first step is to schedule a consultation with a specialist orthodontist. A definitive answer regarding your suitability for clear aligner treatment can only be provided after a thorough clinical examination. This includes a clinical assessment and radiographic evaluation, such as a panoramic dental X-ray and a cephalometric radiograph. If the orthodontist determines that treatment is suitable for your specific case, impressions or digital scans will be taken and, together with your radiographs, submitted for further evaluation. Once your case has been digitally analyzed and a personalized treatment plan has been developed, you will receive a final confirmation regarding the suitability of the treatment for you.
