Removable Appliances
Simultaneous development of the upper and lower dental arches
This treatment uses removable devices, known as appliances, for the upper and/or lower teeth, which young patients wear daily for 14–15 hours. These removable acrylic appliances include special metal screws (expansion screws), which—depending on the child’s condition—are activated by the child or parents. This activation creates the necessary pressure on the jaws and teeth.
Typically, these screws are activated once a week using a special key provided by the orthodontist, in order to renew the force needed to correct the skeletal problem. This type of treatment usually lasts longer than treatment with fixed appliances and is typically around 14–15 months.
Characteristics of treatment with removable appliances:
- Use of removable devices that require greater cooperation from the child
- Larger appliances compared to fixed ones, requiring excellent care and oral hygiene
- Risk of loss or breakage if not stored in the provided cases
- Longer Duration of Treatment
When to wear them & general instructions:
Removable appliances must be worn for 14–15 hours per day (overnight during sleep and an additional 6–7 hours at home, during studying or other activities).
They do not need to be worn at school, during play, meals, or while brushing teeth.
The appliances fit tightly on the teeth, do not fall out during speech, and the tongue should not dislodge them, as this prevents them from working properly.
For this reason, at each appointment the orthodontist adjusts them to ensure proper fit.
When not in use, they should always be stored in their protective case to avoid loss or accidental disposal.
Never wrap them in a napkin or leave them on a table, as they may be thrown away by mistake. Do not keep them in pockets during play, as they may be lost or broken.
During the first days of use, mild speech difficulties and increased saliva flow may occur, which is normal and expected.
Do not attempt to boil them in hot water or clean them with bleach, as this may deform them.
