What Are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are a series of transparent trays custom-made for each patient. They gradually straighten teeth without the need for metal braces or wires. The aligners are made from a specialized plastic material. To create them, the orthodontist sends either a digital scan or a three-dimensional model of the patient's teeth to the manufacturer. The doctor then programs the specific tooth movements required for treatment, allowing a series of custom aligners to be produced.

Using advanced 3D technology, a numbered sequence of aligners is created. Patients wear each aligner in the prescribed order determined by the orthodontist. Typically, each aligner is worn for approximately one week before being replaced by the next in the series.

How Do Clear Aligners Work?

Using the latest advancements in 3D digital technology and following the orthodontist’s treatment plan, a series of custom-made clear aligners—Invisalign® aligners—are manufactured to gradually move your teeth into their desired positions.

Each aligner applies carefully controlled forces to specific teeth, moving them little by little with precise pressure. This gradual process allows tooth movement to occur in a predictable and efficient manner. Every aligner in the series is slightly different from the previous one. The pressure points also change throughout treatment, progressively guiding the teeth toward their ideal alignment based on the individualized treatment plan created for each patient.

How Often Should My Orthodontist Monitor My Treatment Progress with Clear Aligners?

In most cases, follow-up appointments are scheduled every four (4) weeks and, less frequently, every six (6) weeks. The exact interval depends on the severity of the orthodontic condition and the progress of the treatment.

What Are the Main Advantages of Orthodontic Treatment Without Braces (Clear Aligners)?

  • Invisalign clear aligners are an ideal orthodontic treatment option for adults—and many other patients—who want to achieve a beautiful smile without wearing traditional braces.
  • Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible.
  • They are removable. You can easily take them out when eating or brushing your teeth. This means you can continue enjoying your favorite foods throughout treatment, unlike traditional braces, which require caution with hard, sticky, or chewy foods.
  • They allow you to maintain excellent oral hygiene throughout treatment.
  • Invisalign treatment is comfortable and generally pain-free.
  • The aligners do not irritate the gums.
  • They do not usually interfere with speech, unlike traditional braces.
  • Because Invisalign aligners are easily removable, they do not prevent you from visiting your dentist or periodontist for routine cleanings and other dental treatments.

How Can I Know Whether Clear Aligner Treatment Is Right for Me?

The first step is to schedule a consultation with a specialist orthodontist. A definitive answer regarding your suitability for clear aligner treatment can only be provided after a thorough clinical examination. This includes a clinical assessment and radiographic evaluation, such as a panoramic dental X-ray and a cephalometric radiograph. If the orthodontist determines that treatment is suitable for your specific case, impressions or digital scans will be taken and, together with your radiographs, submitted for further evaluation. Once your case has been digitally analyzed and a personalized treatment plan has been developed, you will receive a final confirmation regarding the suitability of the treatment for you.

Do I need any tests before Invisalign treatment?

To start treatment with Invisalign® clear aligners, an initial clinical examination by a certified orthodontist is required, along with a panoramic dental X-ray, photographs of the oral cavity, and—when necessary—a cephalometric X-ray.

Does smoking affect Invisalign treatment?

Smoking does not affect the progress of treatment with clear aligners. The only negative aspect of smoking during treatment is that nicotine can cause the aligners to become discolored. However, since each set of aligners is used for only a few days, this issue is generally less significant.

What happens if an Invisalign aligner is lost or damaged?

What happens depends on how long the aligner has been worn before it was lost or damaged.

If the aligner has already been worn for several days and the next change is approaching, the orthodontist may recommend moving on to the next aligner in the series. If it is lost or damaged during the first days of use, a new aligner may need to be ordered. In this case, the patient will not remain without treatment; they will continue wearing the previous aligner until the new one arrives.

Are there any restrictions during treatment (e.g. eating)?

Because the aligners are removable, there are no restrictions regarding diet. However, chewing gum should be avoided, as it sticks to the aligners, and smoking is not recommended because it can discolor them, causing them to lose their transparency. Additionally, strongly pigmented substances (such as red wine) may also cause staining.

Is it guaranteed that my teeth will be corrected with Invisalign® aligners?

Invisalign® clear aligners are an advanced technology product that has been tested for nearly a decade with excellent results.

At the same time, the knowledge and experience of the specialist orthodontist who correctly plans the treatment and maximizes the potential offered by digital technology is the most important factor.
What applies in all medical fields (and generally in practice) is that devices alone do not automatically produce successful results. No matter how advanced Invisalign® aligners are, it is the orthodontist who guides the system and controls the tooth movements.
The expertise of the specialist orthodontist allows them to determine whether what appears digitally during treatment planning can actually be achieved in real life.

Are Invisalign® clear aligners the same as other aligners on the market?

No, they are not the same. Clinical experience so far has shown significant differences between the various companies that manufacture clear aligners, which can directly affect both treatment outcomes and cost. Some companies are able to treat even more complex orthodontic cases with excellent results, while others are mainly suitable for milder cases. Therefore, treatment cost varies depending on the system used and its capabilities.
